Ana Carolina Reston was a Brazilian model. She began her modeling career at the age of 13 after winning a local beauty pageant. She was a normal girl growing up in a middle class family. His life took a dramatically worse turn after his first overseas trip to Guangzhou, China. She went to Guangzhou for a casting, and while there she was repeatedly told that she was "too fat". She believed what they said and began her downward spiral of anorexia nervosa. His diet consisted only of apples and tomatoes. He would tell his mother that he was fine and that there was nothing wrong with him. Ana would do anything to avoid talking about why she wasn't eating. His body mass index dropped to 13.4. The World Health Organization considers a body mass index of 16 to be seriously thin, a level she was well below. He weighed eighty-eight pounds at the height of 5 feet 8 inches. At the young age of 21 her illness became so severe that it became an infection and led to her death in November 2006. Society's false perception and unrealistic views of what women should look like have increased dramatically and caused many ailments food to many models. and go as far as surgically enhancing their bodies. (Phillips, 2007) Anorexia has always been prevalent in the modeling industry, unfortunately recently it has become even more prevalent. According to the National Institute of Health, the lifetime prevalence of anorexia and bulimia is estimated to be 0.6% of the US adult population, but for ages 13 to 18 it is 2.7%.
