Topic > Persuasive Essay on Marriage Equality - 674

Martin Luther King Jr. once said that “"Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere" and for this reason I agree with him. I firmly believe that the same discrimination he fought against continues to exist today, and that is why I am firmly in favor of marriage equality. Marriage equality is the belief that anyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, should be able to marry. I believe marriage equality is a human right, not just a privilege reserved for heterosexual people. In my article I intend to support this belief through two main areas. I will first discuss why the arguments against marriage equality fail, then I will show why it is right to support marriage equality. First, the argument that being gay is a sin, so it should be banned. If the American government/people are going to discriminate against gays and lesbians because being gay is a “sin,” then what is there to stop other “sinners” from being discriminated against? What laws and protections do we receive from a theocratic government? The answer is the First Amendment, which brings me to my second point, which is that denying marriage is a violation of our civil rights. Excerpt: The Bill of Rights guarantees that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion [...]].." This means that Congress shall pass no law on religious grounds. But given that there are those who argue that marriage equality is harmful to society even outside of religion, the Supreme Court has made its opinion clear. (“Should same-sex marriages be legalized?”) According to the Supreme Court ruling in US v. Windsor ("The Expanding Power of the United States v. Windsor."), denying marriage licenses to same-sex couples is unconstitutional of and...... middle of paper ...... those minorities, and marriage equality is no different. Which brings me to my final point, that love is love. When people get married, they do so because they want the security and comfort of knowing that the man or woman they love will be there for them through thick and thin. They want to know that if they are sick in the hospital, their loved ones can visit them. They want to know that when they die, their partner will be left with nothing. In short, they just want to be treated equally. In conclusion, I have covered the main points for and against marriage equality. As a nation, we have no right to take away the rights of two people who wish to get married. We as a society have come a long way since the days of interracial marriage, but we still have a long way to go. Legalizing marriage equality would be a step toward equality for all.
