An analysis of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night (1889) IntroductionA lifespan of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) create beautiful works that he loved dearly. Painting was an avenue that allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research Vincent's painting, Starry Night (1889) came with inspiration from Don Mclean's song, Starry Starry Night, where its lyrics spoke about Vincent's life, which further intrigued me to write this article. In this article, we will focus on examining Vincent's painting, Starry Night. The article will begin with a brief introduction about Vincent where an analysis will be conducted to better explore the painting. Next, the article will move on to explain how the Starry Night influenced the broader history of art and the period in which it was created. Finally, the article will further examine two accounts or interpretations of the Starry Night by art historians. Biography Vincent was an influential post-impressionist painter born in 1853, in the Netherlands. With the association of Theo van Gogh, Vincent met renowned impressionist painters such as Émile Henri Bernard and Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin. Impressionism served as a platform for Vincent in developing his own style. He explored with colours, in stark contrast to his usual dark and brooding style. The influence of Japonisme led Vincent to reside in Arles where he began to paint landscapes. Subsequently, Vincent voluntarily went to the sanatorium of Saint-Rémy where his works reflected the strong colors and lights of the countryside around him. His manic depression and status epilepticus led him to suicide on 27 July 1890.
