Topic > The Lebensborn Program directed by Heinrich Himmler

Could you imagine being born only to be part of a race inferior to everyone else? Can you imagine in your mind how you would feel to find out years later that you were basically made for someone and that you might not even know who your parents are? That basically one day you wake up realizing that who you thought you were is just a lie. The Lebensborn Program was supposed to be an advancement of the Reich; however it turned out to be simply the folly of a ruling dictator and his party. There is a misunderstanding about the Lebensborn program and what it was. Many people think that the program was not just about killing Jews, but also about eradicating the genetic ability to come forward and those who would reproduce to do so well. It is necessary to delve deeper into the “Lebensborn Programme”: Heinrich Himmler was the head of the SS. He was a reserved man, perfect for the task of creating the Lebensborn project. It was in December 1935 that the program was created. This was in fact the same year that the “Nuremberg Laws prohibited intermarriage with Jews and others considered inferior” (The Nazi Party). Germany's birth rate was declining, which caused Himmler to set himself the goal of reversing the decline and increasing the German population to 120 million. It was during his time that he encouraged SS and Wehrmacht officers to have children with women of Aryan origin. “Himmler believed that the children who were part of this program would later grow up to lead a Nazi nation.” (The Nazi Party) The Lebensborn program represented the "source of life", the purpose of the program was to offer girls considered "racially pure" the possibility of giving birth to a child in secret. The… half of the paper… and drafted into the army, their surnames were then Germanised, all traces of the children's heritage erased” (The Lebensborn Organisation). In 1942 the Lebensborn program expanded to welcome non-German mothers. Adolf Hitler then designed a rule by which German soldiers would be encouraged to fraternize with indigenous women understanding that any children created would be cared for. Racially suitable women were most often the officers' girlfriends or the SS officers' one-night stands. These women were then invited to homes in Lebensborn where they could have their children in isolation and safety. Works Cited "THE LEBENSBORN ORGANIZATION". http://colanmc.siu.edu/.
