Building on children's experiences with families and communities through the history curriculum, educators help children feel safe and included and promote the principles of being, Belonging and Becoming (DEEWR, 2009) . Being relates to the history curriculum through the development of the child's developing awareness of their social and cultural heritage, this is seen in the personal and family stories strand of the Western Australian curriculum which states that children learn about their family members and where they were born and raised as well as how they relate to each other (Western Australian Government, n.d. ACHHK001). Belonging is the development of attachment to those children trust and care for, this helps children develop a sense of identity as they explore different aspects of their physical, social, emotional, cognitive world and spiritual through play and their relationships (DEEWR, 2009). The EYLF states that “Becoming includes children constructing and shaping their identities through their evolving experiences and relationships that include changes and transitions” (DEEWR, 2009, p. 20). Being, Belonging and Becoming relate to the story curriculum and inquiry-based learning through association with learning outcomes one, two and four
