The Rwandan Genocide took place in 1994 and within 100 days approximately 800,000 Tutsi and “Tutsi sympathizers” were massacred by militias and civilians Hutu. (History of Rwanda, 2010) The conflict in Rwanda started a long time ago and many aspects of human geography and some models of physical geography have influenced the issue. The genocide not only affected Rwanda, but had repercussions on many of the surrounding countries and the rest of the world. The results of the genocide are still clearly visible today, sixteen years later. The Rwandan genocide was a meticulously planned attempt by the Hutus to wipe out the Tutsis from the land, and was effective due to exclusive planning and the failure of the United Nations Security Council to do anything, there are steps that must be caught to ensure this never happens again. Definition of the problem Genocide is defined by the United Nations Convention as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group". (Spalding, pg. 2) This is exactly what happened in Rwanda between Hutu and Tutsi. Hutus made up about 90% of the Rwandan population and are generally darker and stockier than Tutsis. Tutsi made up about 10% and were slimmer and their skin was a little lighter. Although there were some small differences in their appearance, “the Hutu and the Tutsi cannot properly be defined as two ethnic groups because they spoke the same language, respected the same traditions and the same taboos”. (Destexhe, 1995) This basically means that they lived together, in the same way, and were still somewhat the same. Another small difference between the two peoples is that the Tutsi were... at the center of the paper... a murder." Journal of International Affairs 52.2 (1999): 621. Global Issues In Context.
