One minute a student mindlessly looks at his friends' spring break photos. The next thing they know, Facebook has sucked up two hours of their life. Social networking sites are highly addictive, and spending too much time on them jeopardizes their academic performance and overall well-being" (Barefoot 2). My classmate Whitney Wire stated that "I think Facebook can prevent students to achieve academic success. They estimate that they will remain on Facebook for thirty minutes, which becomes hours, while in the meantime their studies are not completed resulting in failing grades" (Interview with Wire). I would like students to understand that social media sites like Facebook are a tool wonderful to use to interact with other college students, but if they're not careful, it can set them back from succeeding in school. According to Fluent, "in May 2015 among college students ages 17-25 they found the vast majority limited their activities on the. social media less than six hours a day. Only 11% of respondents said they spent six or more hours a day on Facebook, but this percentage is still higher than the 8% who spent the same amount of time on Instagram (owned by Facebook) and the 3.4% who spent six or more hours a day reading. and write tweets" (eMarketer website). I think this is a great start because these students know that their success in college is critical to having a good life and that Facebook isn't going anywhere anytime soon
