Direct instruction disproves the idea that students will suddenly develop skills on their own. Instead, direct instruction teaches students systematically through structured steps, helping them see both the purpose and outcome of each step. It is a basic research program. “Direct instruction has a long history of meeting the needs of students with many different complex learning problems” (Luiselli, Christian, Russo, Wilczynski, 2008, p. 201). Reading Mastery is a program designed for direct instruction to accelerate growth in the area of reading. “The National Reading Panel Report (2000) and Put Reading First (Armbruster, Lehr, and Osborn 2001) identified five areas critical to reading success: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension” (Luiselli, 2008 , page 204).
