Mercedez BarraganITA113Professor RenfroEssay n. 4 (final) Friends For Never Many things can change in twenty years. Is anyone really willing to keep a commitment for that long? This story After Twenty Years by O. Henry can be enjoyed by all audiences due to the crime and suspense stories. It was written between the years 1902 and 1905; which influences the setting and plot of the story. This short story expresses a twenty-year commitment between two good old friends. This story fascinated me because of the conflict between one's friendship and one's moral duty towards one's career. The story is set around ten o'clock on a dark and windy night in New York. The plot begins with a cop wandering the business streets of New York, looking for trouble and making sure everything is safe. The policeman encounters a stranger standing in front of a dark hardware store, with an unlit cigar in his mouth. The man immediately turned to the policeman. The man, named Bob, explains to the policeman that he is just patiently waiting for a friend who he is supposed to meet at 10pm. “It's an appointment set twenty years ago. Seems a little strange to you, doesn't it?” He and his friend Jimmy Wells had separated exactly twenty years earlier due to different career paths. Bob went West to Chicago for his career and Jimmy stayed in New York. The two friends had promised each other that, no matter what, they would meet in exactly the same place and at the same time, twenty years later, to reunite. “Sounds pretty interesting,” said the policeman. “It seems to me, however, that a lot of time passes between one meeting and another. Haven't you heard from your friend since you left?" Bob replied that they had lost touch, but if Jimmy... in the middle of the paper... the person is, (family, sister, friend, uncle) anyone should serve time for their crime. I believe Jimmy saved himself and his community as well by not pursuing the friendship. If anyone had found out, Jimmy could have gone to prison for not reporting it .He also saved his community by keeping the streets safe and silencing crime. In conclusion, you might think you know someone, but people can and do change, whether we want them to or not moral to friendship is the best possible choice that any good loyal person would make. It shows how strong Jimmy is in overcoming his long friendship and saving himself and his community When it comes to choosing what is the right, true and honorable to do, making the decision about how you think you should do it is the most important thing.
