Conrad is so depressed that while his parents are away he attempts suicide. He is unable to do so due to his parents' early arrival. He is then sent to hospital to treat his injuries and mental damage. After getting out of the hospital he is faced with real world situations. When his mother and father talk, his mother says, “This time he ran away, but even the smallest, most insignificant encounter is full of complications and danger. He longs, for a moment, to return to the hospital where things were predictable. Luckily boring.”(Guest 114). Holden wishes he had never left that hospital, wishes he didn't have to deal with his mother and other people. The only person Conrad is truly able to talk to about his feelings is his therapist, Dr. Berger. Berger is what Conrad would call a trustworthy man. In one of Conrad's sessions, Berger asks what the overall problem with Con's life is, Con says, "There's a guy in the closet. I don't even know him, that's the problem." (Guest 146). Conrad can't get into the closet to figure out who he's running from. Berger is trying to understand how there can be a problem if there is one
