The society we live in places a series of different expectations on people and especially on women. Women had certain expectations to meet and with that came societal consequences. From a sociological perspective, society creates what and how we do things based on the expectations and consequences we have. Expectations have changed dramatically over the last hundred years of society. The expectations of women in history were to be housewives and take care of the family, resulting in any freedom they thought they possessed being taken away from them. In the story A Pair of Silk Stockings Kate Chopin demonstrates that women must behave like a mother and not be a free person as she would like to be. He demonstrates this by stating "...Between feeding the kids and tidying up the place...". She is stating that women must behave like a mother and must put the needs of children before their own. She can't be herself since she has children to take care of. The freedom she perhaps had was taken away from her when she had children. “He didn't wear gloves” in this quote is saying that as a mother you can't spend money freely. He needs to clothe his children so he cannot afford this luxury. Gloves in this time period were a luxury item to have. You had to be rich to have any kind of fancy items, including stockings and other things for women. Women who didn't have this have always wanted these objects because they want to feel free from everything and experience the world in a different perspective. The fact is that when you have a family your concern is for the well-being of your children. The consequence of going against expectations is that any freedom you may have had will come to you. In the story "Silk Couple Sto...... middle of paper ...... in the real world. Women in society during this time period had very different expectations imposed on them and they had consequences with those expectations In story "A Pair of Silk Stockings" the freedom that Mrs. Sommers had with the money she found, was taken away from her at the end of the story because it was a playful type experience where it would only happen once and that was She had a certain freedom but as a woman she had expectations from society and those exceeded her freedom, she had children and they needed her attention Mrs. Mallard dreamed of her freedom because her husband died and her dream ended. So the consequence of women's expectations was that in the end every freedom they had was taken away. In both cases, both the hope of freedom and real freedom were taken away from them.
