The Cuban Missile Crisis was one of the key Cold War events that Neely brought us to the brink of thermonuclear war. With the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, the Soviets wanted to strengthen Cuba's defense to resist any further aggression so they could have a Soviet satellite in the Western Hemisphere. (CMC Article 257) The Soviets told the United States that they were giving Cuba defensive weapons to defend against any further invasion, but they also gave Cuba offensive weapons that could strike at the heart of the United States. This made the government's concern about the Soviets and possible first strike capabilities against the United States great, making them unable to return fire. The Soviets were trying to force the United States to limit their ability to strike them. While the situation was easily resolved with a simple course of action, both sides sought to remain dominant in the eyes of other nations. The crisis first began when U-2 fighters took photos over Cuba with missile launchers and nuclear missiles. This was alarming because it was so close to the United States. With the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion still fresh in Americans' minds, some people wanted to finish what they had started and invade Cuba once again as soon as they had proof of the missiles. (Thirteen days) The Bay of Pigs was the main factor that led to the Cuban Missile Crisis as it caused the Soviets to supply weapons to the new communist country of Cuba. During this transfer the Jupiter intermediate range ballistic missile was given to Cuba which would give the communists a first strike advantage against the United States, which would make the United States unable to retaliate against Russia. (Thirty...half of paper...missile sites and nuclear missiles to be presented at the United Nations emergency meeting. (Thirteen days) With both sides not wanting a thermonuclear war, secret talks began between the two U.S. they had to remove the missiles and didn't take no for an answer. The Soviets were concerned about the missiles in Turkey and the first strike capability the United States would have on them under the terms of removing the missiles. Finally, finding a solution, they decided that the Soviets would remove the missiles from Cuba as long as the United States promised not to invade Cuba or help anyone who was trying to invade Cuba and that the United States will remove the missiles in Turkey after a certain period so that the United States does not appear weak in the eyes of other nations.)
