Experience n. 1 My experience with Reynaldo Garza Elementary School went quite well and it was the first time I worked with a school counselor. I arrived at school at 8:15 and went to the main office to wait for Mrs. Laura Estrada. He was already at school, but was in a meeting with the principal, Mr. Torres. She came to meet me in person at the office for the first time and told me to wait a couple of minutes because she was responsible for a section of the ad for that day. He said he was supposed to announce the character of the day because it was Martin Luther King Day. While waiting in the official room I saw children singing the song and some college students going to school reading books to children in the library. It was interesting to see how much activity takes place in a school so early. Many people were in and out of the office for paperwork, had appointments with staff members, and picked up children because they were sick. Afterwards, Mrs. Estrada finished her homework and took me to her office. She introduced me to Mrs. Abete, who is currently a part-time school counselor helping her. He explained his schedule to me for today because he said it changes every week because he is the only full-time counselor at the elementary school. She said she has to constantly make changes to her schedule to accommodate her administrative needs and the children's needs. Then, he went on to show me his room and the little stations he has for kids to do activities depending on his grade level. He showed me the technological resources he had and how to use them to play the film for… half the paper… interesting. I continued to help the school counselors by making sure everything was set up and ready to start the Career Fair for the middle school students. So, I started taking photos of all the tables with the speakers before the students entered the gym and invited the speakers to grab breakfast snacks from the tables before the career fair started. It was an interesting morning to see how much movement there is at the school for the events. I have always been involved in school events, but I never got to see how much effort school counselors and staff members put into an event at school. This day made me realize how much I, as a middle school student, did not see or understand the efforts that school counselors make for the future of their students. It was a wonderful experience to have had the opportunity to help school counselors at a career fair.
