Impact of mass media on the United States military Mass media is much more accessible to the general public than in the past thanks to technological improvements and the introduction of social media average. In the 21st century, the United States military has faced many issues. The most evident topics in today's media are; ethics, sexual violence, posttraumatic stress disorder, alcohol-related incidents, gay and lesbian participation in U.S. military service, and representation of the U.S. uniform 24 hours a day. Although the mass media often helps discredit the military, the United States military responds in various ways to systematically improve its operations and training procedures. Since World War II, the forms of mass media have changed significantly. Most of the information disseminated during World War II was in the form of newspapers, radio, and photos. Over 1,500 cameramen documented World War II with stills or videos for the world to see (Schickel). In a scene from the documentary “Shooting War: World War II combat cameramen,” a Navy combat cameraman named Richard Brooks asked Lieutenant General Holland Smith “Mad,” “General, is there any way we can carry a weapon lateral why only us? do you have our cameras?" the General replied: "I don't care if the cameras don't have film, I want the cameras to be there in front of you and the cameras to always be there because those are the eyes of the world" (Schickel) . The importance of the media was one of the efforts that the government wanted to implement to convince the American people to support the war. Photographer named Jimmy Hare said: "Photographs seem to be the only thing the Department of War is really afraid" (Neuman82).
