The symbols of the story most commonly involve racism because the path represents the path of slavery when blacks ran away from their owners and especially from their hiding place so they would not be found. Even the forest represents the same symbols as the path because they crossed it to lose their owners. This story from "A Worn Path" is about an adult woman who goes into town to get some medicine for her grandson. Phoenix risks his life by walking in the empty woods through a path that he already knows very well but that path is a symbol that has to do with slavery because at the time the slaves escaped through the woods and away from the white people who had these black people who worked for them. Before Phoenix left, the pigeons were outside in the morning making noise and this describes that the pigeons are trying to tell Phoenix not to go on the trip because it would be dangerous. While Phoenix is walking around the woods, she gets flashbacks to times when slavery was harsh and did not represent freedom for black people. Phoenix's journey is a little long just walking alone through the woods just to go to town to get the drug Phoenix will do anything to keep her grandson alive and well. During this time it is the month of December, which also symbolizes that in this time and age the slaves struggled with colds and abuse, but some also died of disease. Phoenix is bundled up very well and will keep her warm during her trip to the city. As Phoenix walked through the woods, she confronted herself face to face with an angry mutt who... middle of paper... a bit of a flashback to when she went through similar areas like this and struggled for a while to be in a better place to find peace and happiness and make the future better for her and her siblings.
