In his “State Floor” speech, broadcast from the White House on September 10, 2014, President Obama makes a statement about the ongoing chaos caused by the terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). President Obama addresses his message to the people of the United States of America by calling them “my fellow Americans”. President Barak Obama attempts to comfort and persuade the American people that ISIS will soon be eradicated by successfully using the rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos. During American prime time; 9pm EDT, one day before the 13th anniversary of 9/11, the President of the United States appears on the State Floor of the White House to let the American people know what he is doing. The president uses various ways to gain the trust of his audience, shows confidence while speaking, addresses his previous works; the killing of one of the most dangerous and feared terrorist leaders, Osama Bin Laden, and his sub-leaders in Somalia and Yemen. By mentioning his previous success in destroying terrorist leaders, he makes his audience feel safe by letting them know that America can do it again. It gives people who were watching the speech a sense of security and a sense of America's power over terrorist groups, finally letting people know that America will not only stop ISIL, but will also courageously destroy it. In the United States (perhaps the entire world), the president of the United States is seen as the most powerful individual in the world. This means that President Obama already has many people, and in this case; many viewers who were watching the speech trust and support him. Furthermore, in this speech Mr. President expands his credibility even further by being courageous and showing confidence in America, as the people have confidence in him. It reminds people of the power that America represents and assures people that ISIS will indeed be destroyed. Throughout the speech, he cites several incidents in which America succeeded in invading ISIS, such as the 150 airstrikes in Iraq. Using his credibility strategies, Obama informs his viewers about the chaos and threats of ISIS
