Topic > The Awakening: Self-Empowerment of the Elderly

Katz 7 is required to receive additional licensing and certification. There are options up to doctoral level and at this level would most likely include research and policy. As the elderly population grows, growth in this field is expected to be 25%, with a further 34% growth in healthcare sectors through 2020. Boomer cohorts are cited as a major contributing factor. In addition to the professional staff, there are many volunteers who work in the field with the elderly. One area I have found in my research on the topic of self-empowerment is new age modalities that will extend to counseling the aging population. Individuals like me, who are called “lightworkers,” have a code that they live by and teach by. These are people who empower others by leading by example and are here to teach the joys of living this kind of life. We live by a creed, and as more and more of these individuals begin to emerge to work with organizations, such as therapists and social workers, this trend will continue to grow. Katz 8 The theoretical basis with which I have chosen to advise this group of elderly people is constructivism. There is no particular technique, but rather combines different methodologies that help transform individual dynamics to create change. Constructivism is based on the belief that a person understands himself and his surroundings by looking at life events and reflecting on them. Each individual comes to therapy with different life events, and how that person responds and accepts these circumstances determines what actions and decisions he or she will take. Constructivist theory believes that we do not passively receive a sense of knowledge, but that the rat... middle of paper... our life. I am very aware that my generation, the baby boomers, will have another great responsibility in being the change we want to see. This includes the obvious changes within government, the economy and our environment. The baby boom generation was a generation of change, on many levels, and now that we have reached the next level of our evolution, the challenge is thrown at us once again. If I have to support other seniors to live their best lives now, I'm up for the challenge. In the words of Nobel Prize winner, Bertrand Russell, philosopher, mathematician, educator and social critic. “To be happy in this world, especially after youth, it is necessary to feel not simply an isolated individual whose days will soon come to an end, but part of the current of life that flows from the first germ towards a remote and unknown future”
