Not providing adequate workplace safety can be devastating. Companies put their employees at risk when they fail to implement a course of action that employees are expected to follow in the event of a crisis. While it can be challenging, administrators must ensure that adequate safety measures are implemented to save lives in the workplace, so they must institute laws to protect workers. Two examples are provided to describe the tragedies that led to the adoption of much-needed regulations to protect workers and to identify the role of administrators in protecting Americans. The Triangle Belt Company was one of the largest manufacturers of women's blouses. The company was headquartered in a 10-story building in New York. The Triangle Belt Company was a thriving business of the time, as the short-term market had been extremely profitable until it was consumed by fire. The Triangle Factory fire is a tragedy in which many works died because the company did not have safety procedures in place. When the fire broke out, the employees didn't know exactly what to do. The flames moved from floor to floor, eventually engulfing the entire building. Workers tried to contain the fire with water, a fire hose from which no water flowed. The workers tried to escape from the building, but for many this was impossible. Most of the doors were closed. Most doors opened inward and could not be opened by workers from the inside for workers on the outside of the door trying to escape. Workers from various floors tried to contact other floors. However, the message failed to reach some floors. The elevator contained only a small number of workers. The fire escape collapsed under some workers. Many leap to their deaths. The chances of survival were almost impossible. Following the fire, New York City implemented fire, safety, and building codes. Sanctions were also provided for those who did not comply with the rules. Other states imposed regulations similar to those in New York as “the fire and large number of deaths exposed the dangerous conditions and fire danger was omnipresent in these high-rise factories” (Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, n.d.) . Federal laws were passed due to the incident. Therefore, American workers now have guidelines that must be followed to ensure their safety in the workplace. Another tragedy that caused loss of life is the fire at the Happy Land Social Club in the Bronx of New York City.
