Topic > The Debate Over Man's Reception of God's Revelation

There is considerable debate over the extent to which humanity has received God's revelation. The term revelation concerns the manner in which God revealed himself to humanity or, in other words, how he made himself known to what he created. Theologians generally distinguish God's revelation in two ways: general revelation and special revelation. Many theologians agree that something can be learned from the study of human nature. However, most evident are the moral and spiritual qualities present in mankind that reflect the character of God. It could be argued that the nature of revelation depends on whether the revelation is given or understood through experience, proposition, culture, the scriptures, or all four. Numerous studies demonstrate that revelation has been received by humanity through the Scriptures. The influence of the Scriptures has allowed humanity to discover not only God, but also itself. Therefore, many people believe that the Scriptures are the only true way God has made himself known. Research indicates that through the Scriptures God has inspired, communicated, and revealed Himself to humanity through the elements of the world. Through these studies humanity has come to believe and understand that there is a greater source that can give and take away what it has created. RCSproul states “for whoever or whatever God may be, is entirely beyond our knowledge. Being limited in our ability to think like God, we must believe and trust through the faith that has been built through the very word that has been written. Without special revelation we could not get to general revelation, which is also fundamental when it comes to revelation theology. Each plays a role in the way. which revelation is outlined in a biblical sense. The foundation of doctrine, theology, and how it is received through humanity reflects revelation and can be shown through 2 Timothy 3:16 2, All scriptures are inspired.
