The Middle Ages, also known as the Dark Ages, was a period of time in Europe between the fall of Rome in 476 AD and the 15th century, in which The progress of modern society in Europe came to an abrupt halt. During this period the social system of feudalism became the main hierarchical system throughout Europe. However this has led to a great imbalance in power between the people and the government. The main factor of power and wealth in feudalism was land, kings and lords owned most of the land, while the people had none. During this time, people needed a hero who would give hope to everyone and help them overcome this dark time. This is how the legend of Robin Hood was born. Robin Hood is about a skilled archer who rebels. He steals from the rich and gives to the poor, accompanied by his band of merry men. The struggle during the Middle Ages is what makes people (especially farmers) want to believe in the story of Robin Hood. The fall of Rome in 476 AD to people needing protection against invaders and attackers. This was a great struggle for many people: to find protection, fight for themselves, or get killed by invaders. In the legend of Robin Hood, Robin protected people with his master archery and gave them support by giving them the money he stole from the rich. The fall of Rome also contributed to the absence of a central government which caused the disorganization of most daily life, as there is no clear set of rules and basic agenda for who does what. Economic problems also arose with the fall of Rome, as established trading systems were forgotten as the government is not there to enforce them. Because already in that period the church began to no longer allow people to come closer for fear of contracting the plague. The plague also led to the decline of the church's power in medieval Europe, as people began to see that even the church was powerless in the face of this epidemic. The Middle Ages in Europe were a scary time for most people. It was full of violence, death, disease, inequality, and corruption of higher powers. Most people were left without any hope in life. Many thought that no one cared about them and that they were worthless. But the legend of Robin Hood gave hope to many in a time of despair. Legends of Robin stealing from the rich and giving to the poor with his band of merry men have brought hope to many people's lives. That someone cares about them, and that perhaps they are in a difficult situation, is not so desperate after all.
