When I was assigned the task of creating an event related to the values of the University and the fraternity, ideas flowed freely in my head. Some were elusive, some were intangible, but I hope what I present today is both tangible and practical. As a young man, my parents, at my request, sent me to a Jewish sleepaway camp in Missouri. This camp is a highly respected camp where young Jewish people go to grow up as teenagers. In determining which activity would be best for Zeta Beta Tau (hereafter ZBT) and related to UT and ZBT values, the only activity that stuck in my mind was the ropes course. For those unfamiliar with ropes course it is “a challenging outdoor personal development and team building activity that usually consists of high and/or low elements” (Wikipedia). The ropes course is a time-tested method that builds trust and respect among members, makes participants leaders, and demonstrates the integrity, responsibility, brotherly love and intellectual awareness of those who participate, as well as growing such attributes. Due to the potential dangers of the high ropes, if implemented we would stick to the “low” ropes course. The activities that take place in such events are cooperative games, group initiatives and trust-building games. Cooperative play is “a fun activity designed to reduce inhibitions and break down barriers. These activities are often not based on a defined task but on a sequence of events. Users are often put in positions where they are encouraged to try new things that may place them outside their normal comfort zones” (Wikipedia). Through this, as a group and as individuals we learn how to be responsible and discover things about ourselves and others that were previously unknown… middle of the paper… there would be no mandate for people to hang out on the outside. of the board members. For financial reasons, we will only implement it if enough people decide to participate. In the dream scenario of 100% participation, the leaders of the group (we would divide into smaller groups due to the size of the fraternity but everyone will do exactly the same program) will be the members of the executive committee. Outside of the executive committee the groups will be different in terms of academic level. It will be mandatory for each group to have at least one member for each grade level. In summary, the ropes course is a time-tested method that builds trust and respect among members, makes participants leaders, and demonstrates the integrity, responsibility, brotherly love, and intellectual awareness of those who participate, as well as the growth of those attributes..
