This article will discuss the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or known as second-hand smoke (SHM) among children. Additionally, it will focus on how ETS becomes a problem for children in American families as well as in other well-developed nations. It will describe the effects it has among children living in environments contaminated by second-hand smoke. One of the health effects can be asthma, caused by parents smoking in their vicinity. Additionally, a discussion will be held where, as a public health worker, you try to improve the health of these children and educate parents to reduce cigarette consumption around children. First of all, I would like to define environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ETS is when the lit end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe is inhaled by someone else, also known as second-hand smoke (SHS). (US EPA, 2011) Furthermore, the smoke from these cigars is composed of approximately 4,000 substances which over time scientists have discovered can cause cancer if inhaled. (US EPA, 2011) furthermore, ETS is classified as a class I carcinogen by the US Agency for Research on Cancer (Cobanoglu et al., 2007). Having the definition of environmental tobacco smoke, let's apply the terminology to children. If an adult person has a high risk of developing cancer or any type of respiratory disease. Are children at greater risk of developing respiratory diseases? Children run a very high rate of developing respiratory diseases such as asthma when they live near a smoker. One of the reasons children develop this problem comes from their parents.
