AbstractThe purpose of this article is to explain how a group can become a high performance team. The aim is also to examine the impact of demographic characteristics and cultural diversity on group behavior. This article will illustrate how demographic characteristics and cultural diversity contribute to or detract from high-performing teams. High-Performance Teams A high level of performance forms the foundation for today's groups and teams. High performance is an important goal for many organizations as groups and teams have become more common across organizations. High-performance teams are teams that come together for a specific, important task. For a group to become a high-performance team, the team must be able to use its collective skills and behaviors to become an effective model working toward a common goal. Demographics and cultural diversity greatly influence how a group becomes a high-performing team. Demographic characteristics and cultural diversity can impact group behavior, contributing to or detracting from team performance. There is an important difference between a group and a team: responsibility. Group members are accountable to each other, but each member is held individually accountable for his or her performance. In a team, all members share responsibility as a unit. “A team is a small group of people with complementary skills who actively work together to achieve a common goal for which they hold themselves collectively accountable” (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005). It is important that everyone who is part of a high-performance team has the same purpose and goals. If teammates have different goals or motivations, it can be difficult for the team to be effective. Everyone participating in the team should trust or learn to trust each other. The collection of ideas, knowledge and experiences of several individuals is better than that of just one person. From problem solving to innovation, organizations have relied on the high performance of groups and teams to stand out from the rest. Having a common goal will make each team member responsible for the success and failure of the team. Since each team member is accountable to the team, each member's behavior will have an effect on the team. Belonging to a team requires that each member is clear about the team's goals and objectives and shares a common vision. (Park, 2005) In this way, a group can become a high-performance team. Cultural diversity and demographic characteristics are increasingly important issues in today's workplace, impacting team behavior..
