The symbolic use of color in Beloved In the novel Beloved, Toni Morrison uses color to show the reactions of some of the main characters. Color represents many things in the book. Freedom is an example because once free the slaves noticed the beautiful colors everywhere. They see that the world is not just black and white and two different races, there are many beautiful things that go unnoticed. When Baby Suggs was free, she was able to spread happiness and joy to the community. When the community did not accept this, they fell into depression, but they continue to enjoy freedom, in a different way, more alone than with others. It was when he wanted to see bright colors. He loved the color. On his journey north, Paul D. was told to follow the flowers. The flowers are known to be bright and beautiful plants. Many colors symbolize Paul D.'s path to freedom. Morrison uses colors like orange, lavender and pink in Beloved to represent freedom. Use red to represent death. Baby Suggs, Sethe, Denver, and Paul D have all had experiences where intense colors have affected them or affected their lives forever. Baby Suggs is an inspirational character in Beloved. He has a very loving heart and wants his family to be able to enjoy their new freedom. They welcomed her into the community around 124, until she was betrayed. Then he falls into a deep depression. He is described by Morrison as: "His past had been like his present, intolerable, and because he knew that death was anything but forgiveness, he used what little energy he had left to reflect on the colour." (4) He always asked Sethe for lavender and rose. They are very bright and cheerful in his last days. The colors represented her individuality… the center of the card… represented the woman from Sethe's past, and that made her feel whole again. He was also starting to enjoy his freedom in life for the first time. This was the only time Morrison made Sethe seem happy and confident. This confidence did not last long for her, but she expressed it by using bright and cheerful colors in clothes and in nature. Bright and beautiful colors brought the family together in Beloved. It represents the freedom and experiences that each of them shared together or separately. The color red is a symbol of death and evil in the book. Paul D. is someone who received many "red" warnings at 124, before realizing the evil at home. Paolo D. is someone who received many "red" warnings at 124, before realizing the evil that is contained in that house. In the novel Beloved, Toni Morrison uses vibrant colors to bring out the vibrancy 124.
