There are signs that the bars Birnam often frequents are homosexual areas. Birnam is considering going to Jack, believing he is drunk enough to drink and socialize with strangers. Later in the story he reads the newspaper clipping “JACK's—in Charles Street—WHERE GOOD FELLOWS GET TOGETHER” (85). The newspaper clip read by Birnam advertises the coming together of all men to spend endless time. The clip is intended to attract the attention of men to the bar, and not women, so in both scenes Jack is a gay bar where Birnam goes when he wants to socialize with other gays.
