Training and development are processes that attempt to provide an employee with information, skills, and an understanding of the organization and its goals. . Before this training and development occurs, you must go through an orientation to learn what the organization stands for and the type of work you are expected to do. Orientation is defined as the introduction of new employees to the organization and their new tasks, managers and work groups. An orientation is designed to make the person feel comfortable, competent and ready to work within the company's culture, structure and employee mix. The goals of orientation are to reduce anxiety, reduce turnover, save time, and develop realistic expectations. The operations manager usually leads the orientation. Once an individual has completed the orientation process, he or she is ready for professional training. Training is known as the systematic process of altering employee behavior in a direction that will achieve organizational goals. Some objectives of the training process are training validity, transfer validity, intraorganizational validity, and interorganizational validity. There are several training techniques that can be used to train individuals. On-the-job training can be an informal and formal method. The employee is placed in a real work situation and is shown the job and tricks of the trade by an experienced employee or supervisor. A popular technique is the case method, which uses a written description of a real decision situation within the organization. This is similar to another technique called role-playing. In this tactic you role-play a specific situation to train for the position. The In-Basket technique collects materials that include typical items from a specific manager's mail, email, and phone book. The individual is managed and criticized on the number of decisions made in the allotted time, the quality of the decisions and the priorities chosen to make them.
