There is no doubt that human activity is having a significant impact on our environment. These environmental impacts include the depletion of our natural resources, air and water pollution, climate change, habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity. Due to these growing concerns, we must learn to live sustainably. Living sustainably will allow us to conserve our limited resources more wisely so that they are available for future generations (Withgott & Brennan, 2011, Chapter 1). Although more and more people are aware of the impact we have on our environment, there are still people who choose to ignore the scientific evidence or not fully understand the consequences. Higher education and research are key components in trying to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning the need to address environmental issues so we can make changes to ensure our lifestyle is sustainable. Global population growth is hindering our ability to become sustainable, especially in poorer and developing nations. Empowering women through educational opportunities and family planning programs has been shown to reduce populations in developed nations through demographic transition. Even though fertility rates are declining in developed nations, there has been a significant increase in resource consumption and the consumption of material goods and services (Withgott & Brennan, 2011, chapter 8). While population control may be a sensitive topic, it should be approached as a solution to our overconsumption and need for sustainability. Getting involved in political affiliations or voting for candidates who support sustainability is another solution. We can also support companies that harness… the power of paper… by making it from things I don't use; however, I'm still trying to train my husband to turn off the lights. We currently use energy efficient appliances and light bulbs, but in the future I would like to look into electric cars and solar energy. These technologies have high initial costs, but sooner or later I would like to start using them. Finally, I would like to participate in volunteer opportunities, such as beach cleanups or tree planting. There are many things we need to change in society to become sustainable for future generations.
