This leads to one of the biggest questions of the film: How did he get like this? Hirschi's Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people's ability to anticipate the consequences of their behavior” (Macionis 248). In the film it was shown that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is one of the main reasons why he will behave so deviantly in the future. One of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment concerns family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as the “crazy cousin” of one of Benny's friends. It was clear he didn't like having Sam around. This may reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he didn't even live with his parents. This would lead Sam to behave deviantly without caring what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was expelled from school due to his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once the relationship broke down. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it is fundamentally about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. Sam's character, as stated before, was expelled from school. So school didn't keep him away from deviant behavior. And then there's the revelation that Sam can't write or read well. Sam had been trying to get a job at a movie store, but he would have to submit an application, which required him to write. He appeared scared and nervous after attempting to write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which led him to act more deviantly. A final reason Sam behaved so deviantly was that he had few opportunities in life. He was aware that he could not write, so he never attempted to make a career in the world. Him
