Miss JulieIn Miss Julie, by August Strindberg wrote about the naturalistic view of human behavior. Symbolize the behavior through animal images. The animal imagery used by Strindberg helps him exemplify his naturalistic vision. The first animal image used by Strindberg is the dog. Jean uses the dog imagery to describe to Kristen how Miss Julie made her ex-boyfriend act out before the breakup. “Well, he was making him jump over his whip like you teach a dog to jump.” A dog is man's best friend only because it is an extremely loyal animal. The fact that Jean compares what Miss Julie did to her ex-boyfriend to what someone would do to a dog shows Miss Julie's drive to be the dominant one or the master. Strindberg uses the image of a dog again when he has Miss Julie say "dog wearing my collar" to Jean. Miss Julie believes that her social status is so superior to that of Jean that their relationship could be compared to that between an owner and his dog. The dog imagery in the play is also used to demonstrate the difference in social classes. In the play Miss Julie's dog, Diana, is impregnated by the lodge keeper's pug. Kristen demonstrates Miss Julie's disgust when she says; “He almost got poor Diana shot for chasing the keeper's pug.” The sexual relationship between the dogs also represents the sexual relationship between Jean and Miss Julie and the way the two look down on each other.
