Topic > The need for gay marriage equality - 638

I think that gay marriage should be allowed in this country and that gay people should have the same rights as straight people. Gay marriage really has nothing to do with the Bible or religion, all because it says something being wrong in the Bible doesn't make it true. People's rights should not be based on a book. Because the same book said owning slaves is fine as long as you don't kill them. It seems like people care about what other people do, why do you care? Gay people are even victims of hate crimes. Once, on June 24, 1973, some guys burned down a bar full of gays and killed 29 people in that fire. Sounds like something you'd go to prison for, right? Well, they found tons of evidence for the crime but never bothered to go any further in this case. Some people think this is because they found out that the 29 people who died were gay, so they didn't care. One of the survivors of the fire was a teacher who was fired because they found out he was in the bar. Why are people so worried about this when more serious things are happening in the world? Children die every day because they have no food, pollution is getting worse and there are still wars going on. Most young voters say same-sex marriage equality is a given for society. Even some of the naysayers who aren't stubborn say they will lose in the end. The first known article about gay people and marriage was in 1989. The idea was relatively new at the time and spread quickly, but everyone was like, "WAAAAAAHH what are you talking about." But the reason it spread so quickly was because people thought it was an obvious idea. divorce rates compared to normal couples. If someone who is not part of a religion is forced by religious people not to be able to marry, isn't this also a form of being forced to worship a religion? How would we feel if some religion or someone else imposed their beliefs on us? We probably wouldn't feel so good about it, so why do we do this to gay people? All they want is to have the right to marry, I don't think, that's too much to ask. As a nation, I think we have no right to take away the privilege of marriage from two people who want to engage in a relationship with the one they love. Society has come a long way since the days of illegal interracial marriage. However, intolerance still exists for many minority groups. Legalizing same-sex marriage would mean taking a step towards a nation free from prejudice.
