Critics of Sheff's memoir may exaggerate David's actions and make them seem as if he was only doing what he thought was best for himself. This wasn't the case, David was asking other parents how they had responded to their own experiences with their addicted children. He was taking the time to figure out the best way to proceed in helping his son. The back cover of Sheff's book, Beautiful Boy, reads: "But as a journalist, he instinctively sought every avenue of treatment that could save his son." and refused to give up on Nic.
