Outbreak Details On 10 December 2013, BBC News/Africa reported a deadly outbreak of bubonic plague in a village near Mandritsarad in northwestern Madagascar. The epidemic that occurred a week earlier emerged after the deaths of 20 people in the village. Tests conducted on the bodies by the Pasteur Institute in Madagascar certified that the death was linked to the bubonic plague. Since unsanitary conditions are the main cause of the spread of the plague, a program to exterminate rats, fleas and cockroaches has been implemented to prevent the spread and further epidemics in areas of the country where living standards have worsened.4.
