Page: Identifying Bed BugsHow do I know if I have bed bugs? There are several signs of an active infestation. Most commonly one individual (designated The Host) will suffer bites. Telltale bite marks can appear on the face, neck, arms, hands, or any other part of the body while you sleep. More than one individual in a family may experience bites, some may not have as strong a reaction to bites as others. Bites may appear as red bumps on the skin. It may be difficult to tell if you have been bitten by a bed bug unless you find bed bugs or signs of an infestation. Bed bug bites can be mistaken for another cause or rash. When bed bugs bite, they inject an anesthetic and anticoagulant to prevent the person from waking up and realizing they have been bitten during the meal. Most people don't realize they've been bitten until bite marks appear, which can take one to several days after the initial bite. These red bumps are often small, flat, or raised. Symptoms of these pieces include redness, swelling, and itching. Bed bug bite marks can be similar to those of a mosquito or flea: a slightly swollen, red area that is itchy and irritating. They may appear random or appear in a straight line. Other symptoms of bed bug bites may include insomnia, anxiety, and skin problems from scratching the area of bed bug bites. However, these bed bug bites can take up to 14 days to develop in some people, so it's important to check for other signs of bed bugs.
