If one does not have the ability to control what he thinks, does, or even what he says, then, according to Orwell, he cannot remain “human”. However, according to Winston, remaining human was possible. There were ways in which a person could avoid falling into the clutches of the Party. In 1984 Winston says: “They can't get inside you. If you can feel that it is worth remaining human, even when it can have no result, you have beaten them'” (Orwell, p. 166). Winston is among the few people who believe that there is still hope for the world. He firmly believes that there is a way to beat the Party; that there is a way to survive and hold on to what makes someone human.
