If the US had decided not to drop the bombs and continue with a land invasion, then there would be a continuous cycle of D-day invasions and a situation of several bloody battles stalled. With the dropping of the atomic bombs, the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and declared they had lost the war. As previously stated, the Japanese fight to the death and would most likely win in an attempted land invasion. Some counterarguments might say that there were alternatives such as a demonstration on an island or that the United States should have waited for help from the Russians. However, Japanese culture would have mocked the United States if they saw them dropping the bomb on a desert island. Furthermore, the Russians had just left East Germany and had at least a minimum four-month window to mobilize their armed forces all the way to Japan, and still had time to effectively invade. Furthermore, the invasion would not have worked due to Japan's barbaric combat tactics. On top of all this, the American economy was still in a severe depression. The United States had to end the war quickly so that the government could focus on efficiently restoring the economy and emerging from the depression.
