Has the thought ever crossed your mind that you might be shot dead while calculating this month's sales figures, participating in an operational review of a future briefing or simply having a coffee with a colleague while talking about plans for the upcoming weekends? Maybe it should, it crossed my mind several times after listening on the phone to the panic, screaming, and faint sound of gunfire at the Washington Navy Yard. Despite my education and years of experience, it seems that retirement has clouded my vision a little, I put those glasses back on and took a hard look at the building where I work between 40 and 50 hours a week and now I have given that it is a potential slaughterhouse. A design accentuated by limited exits within sight of each other, enclosed office spaces, and limited interior locks would provide advantages to an active shooter with even limited skills. The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides an annual count of fatal workplace injuries in the United States, including workplace homicides. From 2006 to 2010, an average of 551 workers per year were killed in work-related homicides. In 2010 (the latest year for which final data is available), the CFOI reported a total of 518 workplace homicides, or 11 percent of all workplace fatalities that occurred that year. Of these, 77 were multi-fatal homicides in which two or more workers were killed, including 69 homicides and 8 suicides of assailants, all of whom were on the job at the time of the incident. These figures were made public due to recent tragedies in the country, such as those at Sandy Hook Elementary School (2012), Virginia Tech (2007), and Fort Hood (2007).
