Topic > Obesity Causes Diabetes - 1041

If we look back in history, obesity was not a problem among our ancestors. In reality they hardly had enough food to survive. So it shouldn't be a surprise when hundreds of years later, and with the abundance of food, there is an increase in the average weight of people. Along with weight gain, the number of diseases patients can be infected with, such as diabetes, also increases. Obesity and diabetes affect many people in the United States, but could obesity cause diabetes? Obesity is more common than you think. A question that may arise is: what is obesity? Well, “Obesity, defined as a BMI of 30 or greater, is responsible for nearly 300,000 deaths each year in the United States” (“Harmful” n.pg.). This statistic is scary. 300,000 people could still be alive if they watched what they ate. Since our society has unlimited amounts of food, everyone feels the need to overeat. By eating too much, the public creates even more problems for itself. According to the Obesity Risks article, “Increased body weight itself causes problems that result in injury and disease, including osteoarthritis and sleep apnea” (n.pg.). Sleep apnea is where the tongue has excess fat. When obese patients sleep, their tongue will fall back, blocking air from entering their lungs and causing them to stop breathing while they sleep. There is a cure for obesity: weight loss. Most doctors advise obese patients to lose weight, otherwise the health risks will continue to increase. Obesity can affect a wide range of people, from young people, to middle-aged people, to the elderly. A person's age does not matter. What matters are a person's eating habits. When a person eats too much, their fat cells begin to grow. According to the article Obesity Risk... in the middle of the paper... living and maintaining a healthy weight, you should not have obesity or diabetes problems even with the abundance of food in our society.
