While in the concentration camps the Jews lived in terrible conditions and were treated with such disrespect. Adolf Hitler became the leader of Germany starting in January 1933 and ending in May 1945, during this time Hitler started the Holocaust (Adolf Hitler). The people in Hitler's army were known as Nazis. The Nazis were anti-Semitic, that is, they hated Jews (Zullo). Hitler and the Nazis assumed that Jews, along with gypsies, homosexuals, and disabled people, were substandard and did not deserve to live (Zullo). During the time of the Holocaust, Jews in Europe were subjected to increasingly violent discrimination, which ended up killing approximately 6,000,000 Jews (Adolf Hitler). Concentration camps were an important part of the Holocaust. Concentration camps are camps where the Nazis confined Jews, usually under harsh conditions. Concentration camps were used from the time Hitler was leader until the end of his presidency. Soon after Hitler became leader, concentration camps were established in Germany. After the Nazis took power in the SA, the SS, police, and local civil authorities set up numerous concentration camps to imprison real and perceived political opponents of Nazi policy (concentration camps, 1933-1939). The living conditions of the people in concentration camps were so terrifying that it is too difficult to even imagine. For breakfast they would have some sort of coffee substitute and a ration of bread. The midday meal consisted mainly of a watery cabbage or turnip soup. The evening meal could be the same as the morning meal. The survival of the Jews may depend on whether they can bribe people into giving them more food. Many camps did not provide water, and when they did, it was polluted water.
