An estimated 589,430 people in the United States will die from cancer in 2015 (ACI, 2015). Seeing a loved one die of cancer is heartbreaking. Seeing a loved one suffer from the side effects of cancer treatment is equally difficult. The battle to cure cancer has been stressful and tough for patients. The most popular way to treat cancer today is through chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a way of treating cancer using chemicals, especially cancer drugs. A new and emerging way to treat cancer is nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is the science of regulating matter at the scale of molecules (NCI, 2012, para. 1). Nanotechnology gives the power to selectively treat cancer cells unlike chemotherapy. Nanotechnology is a more effective way to treat cancer than chemotherapy because it offers the power to selectively treat cancer cells without harming normal cells and giving fewer side effects to patients. Nanotechnology is more powerful at selecting cancer cells and killing them, while chemotherapy is not as effective and has several side effects. Chemotherapy creates numerous dangerous side effects, including toxicity to vital organs as a result of killing normal cells. (Gunjal, Schneider, Abdelbaset, Kakar, Kucia, & Ratajczak, 2015, p. 1). Having the ability to treat only cancer cells with nanotechnology is a safer alternative and causes much less pain to patients. During cancer treatment, nanotechnology does not kill normal cells while chemotherapy destroys countless healthy cells. Nanotechnology can distinguish cancer cells from normal cells in MRI using particles such as iron oxide-based nanoparticles, gadolinium-based nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles (Mody, Pharm, 2011 pg...... middle of the paper ..... .involved in chemotherapy include toxicity to vital organs as a result of the killing of normal cells (Gunjal, Schneider, Abdelbaset, Kakar, Kucia, & Ratajczak, 2015, pg. 1 ). and will continue to grow with time and research. Nanotechnology has proven to be the best method to treat diseases such as cancer. Although nanotechnology still requires some research to overcome some barriers, nanotechnology has turned dreams into reality. studying and researching a cancer treatment that is safer and has a huge chance of replacing chemotherapy and should give hope to friends and families if they ever learn that a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to nanotechnology, winning the battle against cancer will no longer be such a painful fight in the future.
