Topic > Research on the mansions of Fatima in relation to the theories...

In relation to this statement I decided to research a community in the city center of Dublin. I will focus my research on the Fatima Mansions community as it relates to community theories, community functions, community supports and resources, and community integration versus community marginalization. There is no single definition of Community, Community is a contested concept which when we begin to study we learn is a very complex topic. Bell and Newby (1976) provided four definitions of community, one of which refers to the community as a “specific place and to envision it as a small, self-sustaining society.” Some functions of community were outlined in “The Community in America” (1963) by Ronald Warren, these functions are as follows:1. Socialization: “Socialization refers to how we absorb the rules of behavior common in our society.” (Abbott 1998:10) This feature allows children and adults to learn from each other. Norms, customs and values are learned from community members. This socialization provides individuals with the ability to function within their community by acquiring the ideologies and customs of the community.2. Social Control: Social control can come in two forms: formal and informal. Formal methods of social control are generally implemented by the legal system. Informal methods of social control are generally related to family and educational institutions. Social control aims to ensure that the expected behavior of the community is respected.3. Mutual Support: This feature is very evident in the Fatima Mansions community I studied. This mutual support is the support given within the community between residents. It was evident... halfway down the paper... a plan that everything would change. Not only did the surrounding areas' opinions have to change about Fatima, but the residents themselves also had to start changing their opinions and start feeling proud of the place where they lived. Now, with the continuing regeneration of Fatima, there is evident social integration within the community. as there is now both private and public housing in the community. This integration addressed the once important problem of social isolation experienced by the people of Fatima Mansions. After carrying out my research on the Fatima Mansions community, I learned of the difficulties this community has suffered, including social marginalization and dysfunction, but with the support, resources and drive of the community, these difficulties have been overcome and now Fatima Mansions is the community it once aspired to become.
