Topic > Robert Walton's letter - 1739

The Robert Walton letters: the captain of a ship that has left for a dangerous voyage and is headed to the North Pole. Robert writes letters to his sister Margaret. In the first letter he tells her how he wants to realize what has not yet been discovered or "some great purpose". In the second and third letters he tells her how lonely and isolated he feels, how romantic he is, with his "love of the marvelous, a belief in the marvelous", and thinks that he will become nobody. In the third letter Walton tells his sister that his ship has sailed and that he is confident of achieving his goal. In the fourth letter Walton tells her how his ship is between huge sheets of ice. Walton and his men spot a sleigh driven by a gigantic creature not far from them. Walton and the stranger become friends, and the stranger begins to tell Walton his story.1-2The reader learns that the stranger is Victor Frankenstein. It starts with his family and his childhood. Victor Frankenstein had a fabulous and luxurious life. Victor's father's friend died, and his father became Caroline's protector, when her father, Beaufort, Alphonse's longtime friend, died in poverty. They married two years later and Victor was born shortly thereafter. After Victor's parents get married, they adopt a girl named Elizabeth, who becomes Victor's game. Victor's mother decides at the time of the adoption that Elizabeth and Victor will one day marry. Victor and Elizabeth grow up happily together and he spends time with his best friend Henry Clerval. Victor wanted to learn everything about nature, he is fascinated by the unknown. Victor's father considers the works Agrippa, Paracelsus and Magnus to be rubbish. During a violent storm, she witnesses the destructive power of nature when lightning destroys a tree and... middle of paper... what the future holds due to threats from the creatures and how Elizabeth will feel. He tells Elizabeth to rest and he went to look for the creature because he knew it would come. Not long after he left he heard Elizabeth scream. The monster killed her. Victor had no intention of pursuing Elizabeth, so Victor goes home and tells his father about Elizabeth and within a couple of days his father dies of grief. Victor finally tells his secret to a magistrate, but the magistrate does not believe him. Victor then vows to kill the creature, so he goes to find it. Victor's entire family had been destroyed. He leaves Geneva and goes into the snow and ice of the North. Victor is ill on the ship and has been affected by the ice. Victor tells his story to Walton and tells him to kill the "demon". Victor dies and the creature disappears into the darkness and plans to burn.
