Investing in Human CapitalWhen you think of investments you might think of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, savings accounts, CDs, and so on. There is another way you can invest. You can invest in your life through various things, both voluntary and paid. This is called human capital and it is “the set of knowledge and skills, embodied in an individual as a result of education, training and experience, which make him more productive” (1). I have invested in my life in various ways and I will talk about them in the next paragraphs. The first thing I experienced was something that started when I was six years old. That's when I started kindergarten at Kirbyville School. I went to Kirbyville until the sixth grade, then moved to Branson and stayed there until I graduated as a senior in the class of 2002. This is where I learned valuable skills that I can use in college. We all know that we learn the basics like counting and ABCs to trigonometry and English for college prep. The most important thing about high school, though, is that you learn the perseverance to overcome rigorous studying and lengthy homework. These things prepare you for college. So school before college is a very big investment because it's the first building block to getting a job later in life that provides you with a lot of capital. The next step I took was to go to College of the Ozarks. If this isn't preparing me for better money in the future, I don't know what is. I major in accounting and am taking courses that give me great potential for a wide variety of jobs in the future. I have taken beginning and intermediate accounting and am taking advanced accounting right now. I have taken cost accounting, government/non-profit accounting, tax accounting, and am taking a course to improve my computer skills for accounting. I also took business courses to help me understand the management and marketing side of a business. The principal teachers in my field of study have been Mr. Mahlman, Mr. Bearden, DR. PETTY, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Moody and Mr. Reily. I will also be attending a college that is a work/study college and that means you work towards your education on campus.
